Holistic Care. What is that?

Holistic Care. What is that?

Holistic Care is something I’ve been curious about. I don’t know about others, but I hear about it here and there and have been wanting to learn more about it. I was able to talk to another provider named Ryan Thebo from PW Psychiatry and he was able to share information with me about Holistic care, what it means, and how it can work hand in hand with mental health.

Holistic psychiatry is something I learned from Ryan where it offers services that address mind, body and spirit without non-pharmacological treatments. Keep in mind this isn’t about pushing away pharmacological treatments and saying one is better than the other. It’s about looking at more options of care and you can even use holistic treatments along with pharmacological treatments and therapy.

Holistic Psychiatry is where, rather than focusing on just symptoms, one looks at other various therapies to help with roots of distress such as looking at diet, lifestyle, and other strategies.

Some key approaches to holistic care are nutritional psychiatry, mindfulness and meditation, lifestyle and exercise, herbal and botanical medicine, therapeutic techniques, biofeedback and neurofeedback, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine.

These are all different approaches that can be options to help promote healing in what suits a client's wants or needs. Again, these are just giving people choices to explore other options if you're curious or want more information on these approaches. All these holistic approaches are recommended to be paired with therapy.

I’m slowly learning more about these options myself and learning from colleagues such as Ryan to be more informed in case others are interested in looking into holistic care. I also encourage people to feel free to reach out to me if you’re interested in certain holistic care
